| |
Four programs will comprise the 2010-2011 Concert Series. This season's concerts will take place on Saturday evenings at 8: October 2, The Yale Whiffenpoofs; December 18, New York Polyphony; April 2, The Baltimore Consort; May 14, Laurel Masse.
The Whiffenpoofs are the nation's oldest collegiate a cappella group. Whiffenpoof hopefuls compete at the end of their junior year for one of the coveted fourteen spots. If chosen, they spend much of their senior year in performance. The group has performed at Lincoln Center, the Salt Lake Tabernacle, Carnegie Hall, and the Rose Bowl.
New York Polyphony is one of the finest classical vocal ensembles of its generation. With "beautifully blended voices of individual distinction" (The Independent), the four men deliver dynamic performances in a wide range of styles from simple plain-chant to complex modern works. The group has recorded three CDs, most recently "I Sing the Birth" (cited as "One of the Season's Best by Gramophone Magazine).
The Baltimore Consort was founded in 1980 to perform the instrumental music of Shakespeare s time. They have explored early English, Scottish, and French popular music, focusing on the relationship between folk and art song and dance. Their celebrated recordings on the Dorian label earned them recognition as "Top Classical-Crossover Arts of the Year" in Billboard Magazine.
Laurel Masse has been called "one of the two or three best female jazz singers this side of Sarah and Ella" (Chicago Sun-Times). A founding member of the Manhattan Transfer, Laurel toured internationally for seven years, recording four albums certi-fied gold and platinum. She has recorded several jazz albums as well as "Feather and Bone" a vocal meditation on the Divine described by The Absolute Sound Magazine as "a recording of extraordinary musical and sonic value."
Tickets for each event are $20. A season subscription is $75. A portion of the proceeds from this year s Concert Series will be given to the St. John s Fund, a fund established and sustained by the Church but administered by the town of Washington. The fund provides emergency financial assistance for members of our community.
