Rector’s Message

Dear Friends,

Suddenly, we stand at Summer's edge. Before us lie graduations, gardens, vacations, and time to rest...to be refreshed.

I pray that each of you finds that the weeks ahead provide you with all that you anticipate they might. I pray also that yours will be a Summer of health and peace and deepening Faith.

Faithfully

The Reverend Robert L. Ficks III

  Rummage Sale Alert

Our stalwart Rummage Sale leaders for a number of years have both, for different but equally good reasons, had to step down from their positions. Michael Caroe will be overseas this year, and Richard Kaufman has just undergone very successful bypass surgery but clearly is not ready to oversee the Rummage Sale. With this in mind, we are asking members of the Parish to contact the Office to indicate a willingness to oversee this event and help with it. We will plan to wait until June the 1st to determine if the appropriate support for this effort has come forward. If it has not, there will be no Rummage Sale this year. Please give some consideration to this possibility.

The Office number is 868-2527. We hope we might hear from you.

Rector Away ~ The Rector will be at a Board Meeting of the College of Preachers for the period June 7-9, in his absence, the Reverend Roger White (927-3486) will take emergency pastoral call and celebrate the Eucharist on June 9th.

Outreach Committee ~ At its regularly scheduled meeting of May 9th the Committee heard in some detail, of the work of the Wellspring Foundation. It is hoped that the Outreach Committee will be able to visit Wellspring to learn more of what goes on there first hand in the weeks ahead. A tentative luncheon date has been established, and we hope members of the Committee will attend.

Loaves & Fishes ~ Our day for Loaves & Fishes is June 18th.  Please sign up for cooking food or delivering and serving it at Loaves & Fishes.  The sign-up sheet is in the Parish House. Please have the pans of food delivered by Noon on the 18th.  Please note: we are extremely needful of volunteers to help with serving on that day.  It will not take a great deal of your time, but it will be a tremendous help at the Soup Kitchen.

Vestry News ~ At its regularly scheduled meeting of May 16, 2004 the following received attention.

  • The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as read.
  • The Treasurer’s Report was accepted as presented.
  • The ongoing work of the Stewardship Committee in planning for next year was reviewed by Mr. Fowlkes. The Vestry has applauded the efforts currently underway and it is hoped that they will lead to success in the months ahead.

Newcomer’s Luncheon ~ A luncheon hosted by the Vestry will be held on June 20th to welcome new parish members to Saint John’s. The invitations went out last week. If you did not receive an invitation and should have, please call the Office (868-2527).

Report from the Organist Search Committee ~ The Committee is comprised of Ann Martindale, Zemma White, Laura Daly, Tom O’Connor, Steve Morris, John Hall, Winston Fowlkes, Chris Boshears and the Rector. It began meeting on the first Monday after Easter. Much progress has been made. In excess of thirty resumes have been received and reviewed. A number of candidates have been dismissed from the process in recognition of the fact that the gifts they possess do not necessarily match terribly well with those being sought in this position. However, from those remaining, a considerable number of extremely impressive candidates remain. The Committee is now in the process of doing its due diligence, checking references, and arranging visits to the most promising of these individuals. We had originally hoped that the process might move rapidly enough to be completed by late June or early July. It now appears that we must be realistic enough to expect that it will be mid July before what we pray will be a happy issue is reached. If you have any questions, you are more than welcome to give the Rector a call. He would be happy to discuss these matters with you. We ask that you keep the Committee, the candidates, and this Parish church in your prayers in these important days.
